Providing a library service for a large network with multiple sites is no easy feat. In addition to its extensive library catalogue, NSLHD Libraries have subscription content from more than a dozen vendors, and access to the Clinical Information Access Portal (CIAP), consortium purchased resources available to all NSW Health staff. In 2019, after years of innovation and modernisation, the libraries undertook a major project to bring all systems to Single Sign On using Active Directory authentication. Hear Barry Nunn discuss the evolution of the library service, learning best practices from his peers, and why there was a need for change. Barry shares the planning that was involved, the solution and the results. Mike Mackinnon will then discuss industry standards, RA21 and the security standards of OpenAthens SSO.

Barry's library experience of over 25 years includes delivering library services including 18 years at the State Library of NSW, work at pharmaceutical company, TAFE NSW, a Drug & Alcohol Centre and NSW Health. Barry Nunn joined NSW Health in May 2014 as the NSLHD Library Service Manager, managing the Libraries at RNS, Mona Vale, Ryde and Hornsby. NSLHD Libraries play an important role in up-skilling the workforce and facilitating clinical research. Barry is interested in extending services to a wider audience and enhancing services in the provision of information and resources to support evidence-based practice at the point of care.

Mike has been working in technology for more than 15 years, with 12 of those years in the library industry. His most recent engagement is with FOLIO, an Open Source community driven LSP. Consistent across all his roles, Mike has had the challenge to work with “new to market” services.
